Neofinetia falcata question
Default Neofinetia falcata question

Hi, I am ordering a neofinetia falcata variety reiwnoaka from Japan and I tried to research it but I couldn’t find any information on it, I do know that it’s a triple spur, purple/pink variety. Do any of you guys know anything about it?

Hello,
like you say there is no information on this variety whatsoever. It's like the name was almost made up with fancy colors and a triple spur. added Who knows I am always skeptical when sending money to a complete stranger in a different country.
I know the desire to want a fancier neofinetia - there are hundreds of different ones but it probably is best to get one people have heard about. Otherwise it's like finding a leprechaun - if nobody knows what it is then it might as well be a garden gnome

Honestly I don't see the justification for some of the more expensive ones. They still only flower once a year like any other.

I'm sure you can get some in Australia that should be cheaper to ship surely, unless you really have your heart set on this one.

If you just want a neo I had a quick look and found Neofinetta falcata x self - Woolf OrchidCulture

Reiwanoaka is a triple spur hybrid variety that was made by crossing a pink flowered hybrid with Manjushage. I believe it is a selection of a cross with Manjushage that was named Niji-no-Cho, and selected for its pink flowers.

It is a very newly named variety, named in commemoration of the beginning of the Reiwa period which started in May 2019 with the abdication of the previous Japanese emperor and coronation of his son.

Although it's not registered, it's a real variety that I've seen most recently for sale from legitimate vendors. I guess it could happen, but just because a name doesn't show up in English web searches, it doesn't mean that the variety is completely made up. English language search results only make up less than 1% of the total content available about neos online, and even that is only a tiny fraction of the total information you can find in books and speaking with growers and breeders in Japan and Korea.

that's interesting but still my only thought is whether it will cost more or less than my car is worth and that isn't even a joke because I have seen neo's being sold for more

That should not be your concern as Jonathan is paying.

My concern is safe passage of the plant from Japan to Australia.

Also when received, would be nice if Jonathan posted pictures of it here and certainly when he flowers it.

From Hakumin's description that he believes it is a selection from a named variety and then renamed, and if so, indicates it is a very exceptional plant and a worthy addition to ones collection.

As previously stated, I just hope it arrives safely. I find international order shipping can be stomach churning, but maybe that’s just me. Perhaps I’m too old for that form of pressure.

I’m doing a neo import with a friend who’s done it before, sadly with another lockdown we may have to push the import to next year. He said that the survival rate is pretty high but the quarantine period is pretty long

this should not be your concern just as much.

I mean honestly, I don't care, like you say it is not my concern but how someone online can tell me that my concern is their concern yet you turn around and voice your own concern is just a bit hypocritical is all.

Posts like this do a disservice to the OP. If any of you take offense to a post, reply to it in private. This nonsense does not need to be shared with the entire board, and especially not the OP who is looking for advice.

True Dusty and I felt like there was little need to point out the hypocricy but we are humans after all that like to chat too. For what it's worth I was just trying to voice my thoughts and the OP has already said this whole question is mute anyway since he won't be buying it for a year at least.
So why can't I have a bit of a chat here even if I'm probably not in the right mood this morning. Sorry about that everyone.
