Diaphananthe rutila Male
Default Diaphananthe rutila

Diaphananthe rutila grows in riverine and montane evergreen forest in eastern mountains of Zimbabwe bordering Mozambique, all the way up east Africa and tropical Africa. This species certainly likes to be constantly wet, cool and humid. Diaphananthe is part of the angreciod group but the taxonomist have been at it again and have renamed the genus, I believe it is now called Rhipidoglossum.

Great capture of a species that is not commonly cultivated in N America, and yet abundant in nature. I saw a bunch of these hanging in trees while in Kenya - sadly I missed the blooming season by a few weeks!

I guess just like some other species, when the plant is not flowering you can see by the color of the root tips, which color the flowers are. When the root tips are kind of yellow, the flowers are more like cream, when the root tips are kind of red, the flowers are (dark) pink.
