Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta Male
Default Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta

Hi everybody, I recently purchased a mounted Aerangis luteoalba var. rhodosticta. The small orchid nursery that I bought it from didn't have any care info for me because the business owner/manager was out of town. I've been watering it every morning and both the plant itself and the live moss on the mount seem to stay moist until the around the end of each day. The little plant is doing well and is actually throwing out a spike now. I've looked online, and any culture info that I find is vague or inconsistent. Does anyone have experience growing this plant, or any tips for me?
Thanks

I grow mine warm in dappled sun/shade, mounted on tree fern and watered daily. Other than that nothing special.

might be the photo, it is indeed an aerangis, but the leaf in yours is quite different than mine yours seems to be more "bilobed" on the apex, might be the angle of the picture? the spike also seems quite "fat" for the luteoalbas i have seem, i was under the impression of a more wiry look of the spike for this species.

please keep me posted, i really want to see those flowers

Antonio.

Hmm, interesting! This is the first aerangis so I don't have anything for comparison. I'll definitely post a follow up picture when the blossoms open.

I recently got one of these as well & your leaves look about the same as mine. As it's also my 1st I am no expert, so... You sure that's not a big'ole root coming off that bad boy? Don't get me wrong, I'm with you in hoping it's not, would be great to get flowers & ID it for certain. Keep us posted & good growing.

Definitely a spike! The buds are forming at the tip.

Nice looking spike! Hope this helps regarding culture. Different combinations of things work in different conditions so you will see a lot of conflicting care instructions. I can tell you what has worked for me. I've had this one for about a year now and it is sending out a spike to rebloom. I grow it in a window with other orchids, including phals that rebloom. The humidity mostly stays above 50 and the temp drops about 5 to 15 degrees from day to night as we try to avoid air conditioning and heating. Lowest temp in window in winter is 60F and highest about 82F in summer. When I last checked, the light levels, they were in the 500 to 1500 foot candle range.

Mine came mounted on tree fern which might hold more moisture than what you have. I water it once a day. It is completely dry by the next morning even though there is some moss on the mount. Here's a link to an old photo of it after watering. Aerangis luteo-alba v. rhodosticta | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I noticed you live in SF and we both get water from Hetch Hetchy which works well for orchids.
