My new terrarium!

I'm very excited about trying out this new venture. I've invested a bit of time "and some money" in turning this amphibian vivarium into an orchid terrarium. I've lived in Central America and I travel often to Brazil for work. I've tried to recreate what I see when I go for walks in the park or forest.

I'm not sure about the air circulation... I rigged up a computer cooling fan but it's not very strong. Should I have two? I put moss on the bottom of the tank. It gets very dry here in the winter since we use electric heat and the temperature often stays close to -5C or more ... I figured the moss would keep the humidity up a little but maybe it's overkill. I'm not sure.

It looks great; regarding your computer fan, do you know what the CFM rating is for it? I use Scythe brand high CFM fans in two of my vivs, they provide a nice gentle breeze...

I have three PC fans in my 90gal terr. Seems to work quite well. Being that your tank is far smaller, one might be fine. Assuming you have it located at the top of the terr, I would recommend having it directed somewhat downward with the goal of greater air movement throughout. Also, I would recommend you use a variable DC adaptor. Doing so would enable you to change the speed of the fan and thereby impacting the amount of airflow.

Looks great, I would say that dumped moss with the air circulation will keep it definitely more humid, but since this is bigger vivarium, you may think to invest a little bit and buy some small humidifier, it would probably pay off in a long rung, especially when you will use heaters during the winter. I am living in Miami, and I have live sphagnum on the bottom of my small vivariums but I do still use tiny little humidifier and run it couple times a day to make humidity higher since they are in the room with AC that dries the air as well.

Thanks everybody! I think I might invest in another small fan and that should do the trick. I do have a small humidifier that is timed to go off for 30 minutes in the morning and late evening. I'll take all the advice I can get!

Wow! I like it.I've been thinking about getting one of the mid size Exo Terra terrariums for my minis and small mounted phals. I've seen a lot of good ideas on this board and I'm encouraged to build my own.

It wasn't cheap... but did cost less than I expected. Prices for you in the USA are a bit cheaper too. The Exo-terra was my first choice because the doors make it so easy to work in it. I also had a glass cover made for the top. Exo Terra terrariums have a vent at the bottom which is fantastic. Go for it! Make a little terrarium for your plants!

Thats a beautiful setup. The background will take quite a few plants. Is your fan sucking in air from the outside or just recirculating the inside air. If so, another fan is not a bad idea.
