Masdevallias - species & hybrids for warm vivariums
Default Masdevallias - species & hybrids for warm vivariums

Hello.

I love masdevallias. But the most of this wonderful species need cooler or really cool conditions. But it seems, that some of you all have grown masdas successfully in their vivariums under warmer conditions.

I mean the temperature skala from 20° Celcius / 68 Fahrenheit to 27° Celcius / 80 Fahrenheit, which could be reached in a small orchidarium very fast - especially in summer and when the artificial light is stronger.

So I am interested in hints of masdas (especially species), which could be grown in these conditions and also will flower.

I by myself have grown in such a vivarium till now

Masdevallia bicolor (grows good, but no flowering)
Masdevallia nidifica (grows good, flowers sometimes)
Masdevallia Hybr. "Aquarius" (good growing, good flower)
Masdevallia peristeria (slow growth, no flower)

I think, a list of species could be usefull for some orchidarium users

Regards

Frank, Germany

If you're growing Masdevallias in a temperature range of 20 C - 27 C (68 F - 80 F), you should be trying to grow the intermediate to warm growing orchids. If you're able to get the low end temperatures down to 60 F (around 16 C), then you can grow a large range of Masdevallias.

Try the following in your temperature range:

Masdevallia ayacabana
Masdevallia herradurae
Masdevallia impostor
Masdevallia livingstoneana
Masdevallia nicaraguae
Masdevallia princeps
Masdevallia reginae
Masdevallia wendlandiana

Over in the Pleurothallis forum, there's a sticky that lists warm growing pleuros... Masdies being one of the sp. in the list...

warm growing Pleurothallids?

I have the Masd. floribunda, and it is a warm grower (on the list)... I even got it to bloom twice in the past 8-9 months! I have Masd. zahlbruckneri, haven't had it bloom, but apparently, they have pendant-downward growing blooms & it needs to be in a net pot or (better yet) mounted... So I'm gonna do that as soon as I see new root growth... But it's warmth tolerant as well
