Both my tanks are in the basement too. It is a great place to keep them because it is usually cooler than the rest of the house and allows me to provide the temp difference between day and night.
Usually with lights on during the day temps inside crawl up to 25C and humidity up to 80-85 %. At night I open a little gap in the front doors and top covers so the air flow goes thorugh the tank all nigh and lowers temps to 20C and humidity to 65%.
Since I moved my phals in the first tank about a month ago I got many new spikes on them.

Our Canadian shipping just went up again.
No, They were for pick up only. We had to drive 2.5 hours and back (twice!) to pick them up. Thankfully we have suv and had no problems fitting them into car.

I thought the same thing about putting them in the basement. I often put plants down there to get them in to bloom and I summer the cool growers down there because our summers are usually quite hot and dry.
I saw some glass jewelry cabinets in our Zellers store that is going out of business. I was thinking about what great terrariums they would make.

glass cabinets sound great. are they fully glass or have some frame around? Just make sure frame is not made of wood or something else that would rot from humidity. I used just plastic and glass to build insides of my tanks for that very reason.
also if there are gaps between glass pieces in the corners - you might need to seal it to holdhumidity better.

our Zellers has signs of getting out of business too, I guess it is a country-wide thing.

The cabinets looked to be all glass but the bottom part wasn't. They would need to be waterproofed and sealed. It's tempting, but I think I'll save my money for the orchid show next month. Paramount orchids moved here from Calgary, so I need lots of orchid money.
