I did some similar setup in glass for a tolumnia on a stick, a vanilla seedling that was drying up and it works. I put Hydrogen Peroxide at the bottom to prevent molds.

I like your sphagnum. where did you get it? I only find dried one. Also I am wondering if fertilizer would burn the sphag.

I actually started this terrarium for a ghost orchid on a stick. Unfortunately, the stick molded up pretty quickly due to the dead spag under the ghost and most of it died. Next time I will remove the spag and put the ghost directly on the inverted flower pot.

As for mold, I have not had a problem with it since the live spag took over and began growing. I only use distilled water with almost no fertilizer in it to prevent burning the plants and I found the live spag on ebay from some person selling it.

I would have wanted to re-use that little box for something else too!

I have sphag growing in several pots of orchids in my terrarium. It just sprang up from spores in the dead sphag. I water those orchids with distilled water and hardly any fertilizer. I think you're right about the artificial light. I have one for my terrarium, and the moss seems to love it. It doesn't seem to like being kept saturated, just moist, which is good since I don't want to over-water my orchids just to keep some moss happy.

Sorry that I didnt get back to you this. The name of the person on ebay was pinchingpennies4now. You can usually find live spag on ebay just about anytime from lots of vendors if this person is not selling any.

I have an update for this little terrarium. I didn't realize how much the moss had covered up the Epi, but the piece that was covered by live spag rotted and the piece that was above the moss was doing just fine. So this experiment ended in failure, though it was more my fault for not trimming back the spag as opposed a failure of the growing conditions.

Edit: The top half of the Epi is now in my main growing terrarium (29 gal).
