Oxyglossum wall on epiweb - completed

Hi all,

I've been researching and gathering material to do this for months, and finally today i have planted it and got all the pumps and timers working.
Here is it after planting, drip line is not pretty right now but it works really well and i will probably make a cover for it when i get time for it.

Unfortunately this is not a very good picture and it's only one side, however i will take some proper pictures in a few weeks to show it off.

The idea was to make an Oxyglossum only wall at first but i wanted to downsize my collection for a long time and i decided to get rid of a bunch of plants that were in my way.

So as a result on the wall now are south american species and oxyglossums, both tolerate cool nights and some of these tricky oxyglossums need a diurnal temp. diffrence to survive.
The only plant i'm not sure about handling cold nights is Maxillaria juergensii

Yeah, no idea how i fit that all on a 50 x 50 cm wall (back and front).

I suspect a few of these fragile oxyglossum seedlings will not make it although i really hope they will.

In the future i would really like to add a few more small oxyglossum species but i'm waiting to see how these will do for now.

It's awesome now but it will really be something when all the plants bloom. I can't wait to see those pictures too.

Thanks, the original idea is by Michael Karlbom from Dusk.se if you look it up he has alot of similar setups.

the nozzles in the hose make the water slowly drip out when the pump is on. you dont really need them.

Do you still have this set-up? The photo is down.
I just re-worked my cool case (and have more room now)
and was wondering is you have advice/info on obtaining the Oxyglossums? I have a few, but always looking for more!

Hey Guys,

I´m not using this particular setup anymore, im moving back inside to an even smaller setup.
Heating the tank outside was a mess and it was already a messy setup, some equipment even failed due to the cold winter and i had some cold damage to the plants.

So i took all my plants off the wall and back inside and they are now regaining strenght under lights in some mini greenhouses.

I´m having Mikael Karlmbom make me a single nanotube viv where i will put my most valued rare plants and the odd 5 or so other plants that will not go on it will go in the windowsill.

This is the status on the plants, they are mostly fine unless otherwise noted:
Maxillaria juergensii
Maxillaria spilotantha

Sophronitis acuensis
Sophronitis alagoensis
Sophronitis cernua
Sophronitis coccinea
Sophronitis brevipedunculata

Capanemia micromera
Capanemia adelaidae - Really tiny bit left only and slow grower, very difficult

Leptotes unicolor
Leptotes tenuis - Flowered beautifully with 5 spikes but no pics unfortunately!

D. violaceum - Growing all over the place
D. cyanocentrum blue - Doing well
D. cyanocentrum white - Doing well
D. subuliferum - Took huge damage and was very weak, is now putting out 6 new growths! Doing really well
D. subacaule - Died to mold, weak seedling
D. seranicum - Died to mold
D. masarangense - Died to mold
D. brassii "Kavanaru" - Slowly growing along
D. brassii alternate clone - Doing great
D. agathodaemonis - Died unknown reasons
D. nebularum - Died to mold
D. vexillarius - Small tiny teeny bit left, slowly growing. Will get another better seedling of this
D. masarangense var. theionanthum - Huge setback and now recovering fine

Isabelia viriginalis - Fine
Mediocalcar decoratum - Cold damage but should be ifne
Barbosella australis - Fine
Dryadella sp. - Great



What i can tell you on Oxyglossums is that they will tolerate slightly warmer temps, but to really flower you need to give them those cold nights..

Mine are currently growing at a small diurnal difference, i.e 23C day - 17C night. All are doing fine.
The key is to give them good airflow, good even moist, a diurnal difference of 5-10C is advised.

Some like potted better than mounted.

D.Subuliferum - potted - Intermediate to cold
D. violaceum - Potted or mounted, slightly warmer temps
D. cyanocentrum blue - Mounted, Intermediate temps,
D. cyanocentrum white - Mounted ,Int. temps

D. subacaule ! - Mounted. Cold
D. seranicum - Cold

D. brassii - Mounted or potted, intermediate warmer temps
D. nebularum - Cold
D. vexillarius - Cold to intermediate.
D. masarangense var. theionanthum - Intermediate
