WOW! That looks absolutely amazing, and the amount of work alone to get it right. Now hope it all starts to work as you hoped. I have absolutely fallen in love building orchidariums, and currently have 2. Mine are 3ft long, 2 ft high and 18” wide, that was too small within the year and am currently working on 4ft x 2 ft x 18”. I craft my rock piles, berms etc on top of the egg crate from 11/2 inch blue styrofoam and paint it to look like rock formations. Use driftwood where I can and I make sure I can take it all apart if need be. I use a charcoal layer under the weed barrier, then an orchid mix on top. No smells, moulds or anything in 2 years. Small fan on top under an angle ( hubby made the top)
And have not had any issues. I hope you’re as lucky as I am, mine work great!

You both have to know, I love everything about your setup and it really makes me miss the old days, with all my aquariums. In hindsite I could have went nutts with a paludarium. But didnt even keep orchids back in the 80’s.
Thanks for the memories!
I did have a good number of corals, both sps, and Lps, and softies.

Thank you waterdog, what a nice compliment. I thought you may appreciate a pic of orc#2. I worked with anything I could find on the farm, so cedar rail, mosses, driftwood from the beach, in this one. I do not yet have all the orchids I want in there, so lots of room yet on the background flat upright pieces of styrofoam ( dark brown)

Canadienne - love your setup!!

For ventilation, I have two fans in the lid that turn on when the humidity gets to 97% (I think) and then a fan in the top corner that is on all of the time time. The tank itself has been running for about a month and a half, and so far there has not been much mold. Just a little on the bottom of some leaf litter that got eaten, so I think the springtails and isopods are doing their work! If the pellets for the crabs are in there for a day or two, they get mushy, then the insects eat them up.

Using pure dirt did make me nervous, but as I mentioned, it is for the crabs. Of course, I have yet to see any of them burrow in it yet - typical! I also thought I'd just have to live with the aesthetics of dirt constantly flowing into the water section, but so far nothing! I did put down a mesh screen, weed barrier, and some orchid bark. The top layer of soil is moist all of the time, but it is about 3" thick, so I suspect it may not be wet all of the way down.

And yes, having an actual fish tank in there is a whole other element! I do have a regular 55 gallon fresh water aquarium. I have thought about doing a salt water tank, but I know I couldn't keep up with the maintenance. The paludarium was designed to be as low maintenance as possible. So far, I mainly just remove uneaten food from the water portion every few days, and drop fresh food in once a every day or two, fill up the misting system bucket once a week, and that's about it.
