Uv doesn't kill pithium (root rot) or bacteria. From my understanding it can kill living harmful microorganisms for fish and removes algae in aquariums. Def more useful for aquariums

There is a high-end manufacturer, Acme Orchidarium, that makes self-contained units with RO systems, misters, cooling, etc., and they catch the runoff in a separate container and pump it out with an air conditioner condensate pump.

You understanding is apparently quite limited, making your posts absurd. Of course UV kills bacteria; they are often called "bactericidal lamps" for a reason.

Here is a quote from the abstract of a paper published almost 20 years ago:

"Dispersal of root pathogens is a major concern in closed hydroponic cultures. To limit dispersal, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection technology has been used to remove pathogens but its effect on non-target bacterial populations is largely unknown. In this study, the circulating solution was disinfected with various UV doses (i.e., 19, 38, 59, 88 mJ cm−2) before recirculation. At the beginning of the experiment, the hydroponic solution was inoculated with Pythium aphanidermatum at 6.7±1.5 CFU mL−1. Four months later the population density of P. aphanidermatum reached 1030 CFU mL−1 in the control and 1028, 970, 610, and 521 CFU mL−1 in the solutions treated by the above UV doses. In all UV-treated solutions, significant (P<0.05) reduction of both Pythium and bacterial populations was noted."

Ray I am not claiming to be an expert.
Never seen the point of wasting money on something that doesn't work.

Conversely you cannot claim to be an expert either to prove me wrong when all you did is copy and paste from the web without any experience yourself.

I can state this because you actually failed to copy and paste the article properly. You can't just leave out brackets when it suits you and then leave out the last paragraph so I will include the conclusion of said article:

" In all UV-treated solutions, significant (PPythium and bacterial populations was noted. For the former, its reduction did not result in decrease of Pythium root rot nor increase of tomato fruit yield."

Furthermore it goes on to state that (yes you are right about the bacteria) it kills bacteria including the beneficial bacteria that fights pithium in the first place...

So would I use UV lights or go with what that article finshes off with saying that too little is known about the effects of UV and more research is needed on the subject.

Swimmie,

I was not claiming to be an expert, nor claiming the UV cured infections. What I did do was quote the part of the paper that disproved your ridiculous statement.
