Default My equestris

Hi I am new to the board and I thought I would see if this is normal. I finally repoted my equestris and two what I thought were flower spikes started coming then one turned out to be a keiki then the other one did then I thought from up higher was coming a flower spike but they are all turning out to be keikies.

Is this normal for this plant. Oh I want some of those other colors so cute.

While some Phals are more prone then others for throwing basal keikis. I have not seen this with equestris. What do you fertilize with and do you give it other supplements?

Ted I use DYNA-GRO with Pro-Tekt mixed in it. I don't use any other supplements. I am going to look into them from my reading but I have never used it. I have had the poor thing for at least 8 years and, yes my bad but I had not repoted my orchids in a long time.....scared......so I repot this thing spray it for several days with my K_L_N which I have found out was no good and put it back in my north window above my kitchen sink where it lives and this starts.

I wish I could take credit for it but I am not any pro and have killed my share so I don't know whats happening to it. Guessing it will not bloom this year as it is doing this. It has bloomed I believe every year for me.

It was sulking before I repoted it. Now the crazy thing is going nuts!

I'm not very familiar with those products but it does look like it is growing well. I may have to dig a bit deeper into those procducts when I get a chance. Most Phals that I know of enjoy a good repotting and respond well to it. As for Spiking most of my equestris usually start the new spikes in the fall to winter months for me here in southern Idaho. I would think yours should spike about the same time. I've just never seen three basals kicking out at once. I had several on flower spikes over the years though.

It's not that I don't like it I just didn't know it went bad that fast. I have had it for several years like my fertilizer please don't tell me it goes bad as well. So I just meant that my batch is bad not the product

I really have to start a journal so I can remember when they have last bloomed. I do know it bloomed for several months and the spike was fairly long by the time it was done. I'm kind of exited to think this thing might end up having these four plants and that could mean lots of spikes.

Goodness I hope I don't kill it!!!!!!

You know maybe that's it, I had abused it so bad by not repoting it soon enough so it is so grateful it is rewording ME.

Too funny, I was just about to post the same thing about my Phalaenopsis stuartiana. As I was watering a week ago I noticed a keiki emerging from what has to be the a root. I tried to dig it out a little to confirm, but stopped because didn't want to damage the keiki. Found a couple other places that said this was not uncommon for P. stuartiana.

I thought I had heard that equestris was prone to keikis... although maybe that's the ones on the spikes not the basel ones

Well I certainly don't know this but maybe. I can tell you I was a bit surprised not maybe if it had had one but 3? I thought it a bit much, just hope it doesn't do it self in growing keiki's.

Molly those spots on it's leaves are lovely.

I have never seen an equestris throw a basal Keiki, only Keikis from spikes. It is not typical of the species. Stuartiana on the other hand like schillerianna Keikis from it's roots. It's really easy to see on one that has been mounted.

There are a couple of reasons your equestris decided to put out basal Keikis. It may have been stressed, perhaps due to needing a repot. It also happens when the crown is damaged from crown rot, mechanical damage or a terminal spike. In looking at your picture again it appears that your leaves are very dark. If you are growing in a north window it's quite possible that it is not getting enough light. The basal Keikis may be coming up to aid in photosynthesis. I would give it more light and see what happens.
