Just a few more days left before i can see how it looks like.


Although i'm happy about the flower i don't know what to do about the plant. It has no roots now!!! In november when i mounted it it was just fine, starting new roots but now all of them are paper thin! And all of the leaves also! I stopped spraying it but it hasn't started new roots it has started another flower stem.. Now it's completely dry and doing nothing but growing both spikes. Any idea what i should do about it before it kills itself?

It looks to me like the roots have dried up far to much. How were you watering it. My mounts are dunked in water for 5-10 min every day. Just spraying them may not have been enough, unless it was a very heavy prolonged spray or if they are constantly humid. When I spray mine (when fertilising) I keep spraying for about 5min (with a presurised sprayer that I can just keep playing accross the mount). I make sure water is dripping from all over the plant then keep spraying a bit longer.

As for what to do now... I'm not sure, but I think you need to try keeping it humid and perhaps spraying the base with tepid water. Maybe some KLN.

I think you need very high humidity to be succesful with mounting.

I gave up on mounts because what happened to your Phal is what would happen to my mounted orchids.

I use mostly net pots now. They dry faster than reg pots but they keep some moisture around the roots. I would try to put your phal on some moist sphag.

Ditto with the above comments. I think the fact that it is throwing up spikes with no roots is a last ditch effort to produce its progeny. I think much more moisture and some K-L-N would definitely help. The fact that it's still green and growing means it still has a chance at developing some roots with some intensive care procedures.

That's the thing!! I can't get it too! I was doing exactly what you all are saying, it was covered all over with sphagnum and i watered it every day. All of my other orchids thrive in the florarium they can't stop growing. But with this plant it may have been another problem coz at first it started 4 new roots and then dried the ends of them and soon the whole roots as well even though i wasn't doing anything any other way. I guess it may have been too much water so i removed the moss hoping that it would like it but instead it went all the way dry as the Sahara. Now i don't spray it only keep humidity on 70% that's the best i can get. Maybe a little more light?... I could place it higher in the florarium. Btw when i bought it and got it out of the pot the roots were just like this, no use for anything.. I hope next time i won't have to fight so hard for a plant coz i think at the moment it opens its first bud i'm gonna fall completely in love with it. Sooooo i'm giving it a bit more light spraying every day and placing it closer to the light, maybe it will be enough. Cross your fingers for me!

Going from one extreme of a lot of moisture to very little would be hard on it too. try increasing the spraying or giving it a good soak now and then and see if it helps. Then you may want to gradually increase water or spraying-or it may be happy with that little bit extra. K-L-N rooting hormone at this point wouldn't hurt either. Good luck with it.

OMG it's opening! It's going to be soooooo pretty!!! I've never seen this one live only on the internet but i love these kinda greenish flowers.

The cork will dehydrate the phal. Cork does not hold moisture very well.....you could try to set up a dripper system on the cork itself to help raise moisture levels and humidity for the plant.
