I think.... I should just enjoy this little plant as it is rather than scratching my head all the time trying to find out it's real identity. LOL

One thing I'm rather sure it's not a clone, as there were non-'Red' variety in the same batch of seedlings So I don't know why it's called "Red" then

The price could be a clue.. I'm able to get one of these seedling for approximately 15SGD (approx 5pounds) when they are in stock. Otherwise a the price go up to 50SGD for the seedlings and 70SGD for bigger plants.

Had a lucky friend who found a piece for 15SGD in a midst of the common cornu cervis

Me too, in my huge ignorance, I think it is a var. chattaladae for the strong colour on both sides and the absence of any pattern.
However, my only certainty is that you have a wonderful Phalaenopsis, thank you for sharing such a beauty!

Nono, hybridizers do that quite a bit. They bloom out the cross (grex) see which individual they like and put a clonal name on it to separate it from all the other seedlings of the grex. They keep the few good ones and sell off the dogs to the rest of us, LOL!!

But surely if they keep the seedling they have given the name they will then sell off clones of that and the ones we would buy (which had a clone name)would clones of the seedling they had kept, rather than seedlings in their own right (which would be sold without a clone name)... or am I still missing something.

'Red' should be in single quotes if it is a cultivar (clonal) name. "Red" in double quotes has no standard meaning at all. Var. chattaladae should represent an entire natural population matching a specific description, including any artificially propagated seedlings derived only from that var.

Your "Red" is var. chattaladae only if both parents were var. chattaladae (or the one parent if it is from a selfing) and it matches the official description of the var. Without further information I would guess that "Red" is meant to confirm the color that was desired from the cross, whether var. chattaladae or not. Only the person who produced the seedlings can clarify.

Sry for digging up an old thread but I am looking to buy a Phal cornu cervi 'red' too and having googled for images, I would like to know, assuming the color is the same red, then which flower shape below is considered more valuable? Not talking about individual preferences, but how orchid experts would evaluate the flower shapes. Both are googled images.

Shorter, rounder one like this

or longer one like this?
