Dendrobium cuthbertsonii Male
Default Dendrobium cuthbertsonii

Terry Kennedy of Vandorf, Ontario, Canada spoke to the Desert Valley Orchid Society tonight on the entire genus of Dendrobium. She is an AOS judge and has a fantastic greenhouse stuffed with beautiful plants.

She showed many Dendrobium groups and spoke briefly on their different cultivation needs. She gave some interesting tidbits on Dendrobium cuthbertsonii.

A member of her local society was ill and unable to water the greenhouse for quite some time, including this Den. Outside temperatures exceeded 95 F / 35C on many days. Orchid society members eventually were able to water the plants, and the undamaged cuthbertsoniis soon bloomed profusely. Terry said she believes the keys to growing this plant are extremely pure water, rain or distilled, and never letting the medium become the slightest bit old nor broken-down.

I did not have a chance to ask Terry whether Ontario cooled down much at night during that warm spell. I know northern US states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Vermont do cool down quite a bit at night even during summer heat waves. Maybe others here from Canada can comment on this?
