Dark roots aren't necessarily a bad sign, the roots the plant had when you received it could be old, and old roots can take on a darker color for various reasons.

Even if the current roots die, the cutting may have enough stored energy to grow new ones. If the roots die, and the large leaf also dies back, but the base of the cutting remains in good shape, give it time. It may be rerouting the nutrients from the older growths into new ones.

Unfortunately I think this was it, the roots are actually squishy and the cutting is turning more brown, kind of soft and wrinkled. 😔 I am hoping that by some miracle it pulls through but every day it looks worse and worse.
