Large unknown bug on milt Male

My son (who is pretty good with insects, & wants to be an entomologist) suggests that it may be a soft-bodied flower beetle (species in the genus Listrus). They eat flower nectar and pollen; not likely to be too dangerous.

It is hard to be too sure from the photo, though.
