That is a funny story. I wish I could buy a phalie for 2.99 in Australia. If I could, I would have every windowsill in the house crammed full with phalies or whatever I could get for that kind of a price. To tell you the truth, I cn't see how any grower could supply any orchid for 2.99. That is an amazing price. What is going on in Australia with orchid prices?

That is a good one! I wish that I had been there to see the look on your wife's face. Must have been priceless! I do feel sorry for those trash heap bound orchids though. Maybe you could set up an

Welcome to the European Community and the most amazing Flower-Mass-Production Industry ever: The Netherlands!

I must admit, it is amazing what this guys have achieved with the flowers/plants production...

Appart of all the ethical issues and/or orchidiots feeling (this discussion could be part of another topic ), they have managed that almost everybody can buy and enjoy orchids at home... and also given the first kick to many of us to start this fascinating hobby

You people are lucky to live in Europe where you can buy orchids so cheap, but I don't think a real orchid grower couldn't throw the the cheapies away when the blooms were gone. If it were me, I would just keep hoarding them. Here in Australia last week, Woolworths, our biggest supermarket chain, had phalies in a glass pot with spag for $30. It had no name - just orchid - so that is quite a big price difference to 2.99.

I guess Australia is a very large country with a small population hence the high prices in the shops.
