cyms are the best for roots
look at the state of this poor plastic pot!!!

they are pushing so hard that when i split the top of the pot it popped open straight to the bottom
i could not shake anything loose from this clump so i just up potted her into a 7gal nursery pot and moved her to more light!

Cyms are root machines. When I can't get the roots loose, I give the root ball a good bath with a hose, nozzle set to "stream" to get some force. That washes out anything that is broken down and icky, any medium that survives the washing I figure is OK, but it opens things up a bit.

Catasetum expansum. Haven't watered yet but getting close. Leaves still tightly rolled.

Sharry Baby. I soaked for 15 minutes but couldn’t loosen the roots so I just cleaned up the top by removing the old moss and dropped the whole thing in a 6” in pot with new orchiata bark.

That plant is as ready for spring as I am!
At this point I "tuck in" the roots with a little extra sphag. Catasetum roots like to be fully covered in my experience...

I put this Stanhopea in a new basket about 6 months ago, I had to cut it out of the basket today to upgrade.
