Phal semi successful with S/H
Default Phal semi successful with S/H

I moved a Phal from moss to S/H a few weeks ago and now I can see a lot of fresh green new roots all over the place.

The one concern I have is the cut spike (which has turned brown) always has this white fuzzy mold-like material. I keep at it with a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol but it keeps coming back. It kind of looks cottony or spider web-ish.

The leaves on this Phal do not look very healthy but I am hoping that with the improved root condition and future new leaves this plant can get back to good health.

Is it normal for old spikes to get moldy or is this a possible infection or infestation?

Thanks.

will try a photo tonight but the mold probably will not show up for another day or two!

Root growth right now seems fantastic so i have high hopes for this one.

Sprinkle some cinnamon powder on the cut. it will dry it up and prevent any fungal growth.

I just moved several phals from s/h back to AAA+ NZSphag.
I just don't think my conditions were optimal.
I had the seedling mats, humidity trays etc...but the plants are smaller species and seedlings. The new roots would get dry fairly quickly.
The bigger phals in s/h with pots 4 inches or greater are doing very well for now and I am continuing my "experiment".
For the NZS I only water when the top is getting dry and for the first time in a long while, "I gots phals"

I grow phal seedling in s/h successfully with small sized clay balls (about 0.5cm in diameter). You should try it too. No need to worry about being too dry or wet especially after they grow their roots deeper into the medium.
