Default s/h suggestions for my 'beginner's list'?

i have a bunch of plants that i've been posting about in other parts of the forum, but i am very very interested in doing the s/h thing for some of them. i think they will all need to be repotted, soon, so i will put my list out here and see what everyone thinks about which would be best for s/h. i'm pretty sure some of them are not suited for s/h but i will post the whole list and see what happens. i'll be trying it out on some of them for sure, so please let me know if there are any specific tips /challenges for my plants. my gallery has photos of all these guys.

Alaticaulia trochilus
Angraecum sesquipedale
Gongora quinquenervis
Jumellea arachnantha
Masdevallia schroderiana
Specklinia citrina
Stanhopea jenischiana
Stelis gemma

looking forward to getting started!

I've never tried any of those in S/H. It would be interesting if someone has. I bet the Masdies would be ok though. From your list, I only keep Masdies and Angraecum, both mounted.

I never grow anything in s/h, my weather conditions are too humidy, and my orchids are (almost all) outdoors; for blooming reasons, Stanhopeas and Gongoras demand hanged baskets (the spikes, mainly in Stanhopeas, go direct downwards penetrating the media, and only when they go out through bottom/sides of baskets the flowers will open). You can use wooden (my preference), plastic or wire baskets, filled with non-compacted media (I use tree-fern fiber in the bottom of baskets, than an ad-mixture of pinus bark, coconut fiber, carcoal, tree-fern fiber and/or a little bit of sphagnum and cover the top with pure tree-fern fiber again - the mix in the middle is just to save tree-fern fiber, now forbidden in Brazil). I think Trigonidium needs to be mounted. About the remaining plants I don't have any tip, I think s/h works better in Cattleya-alliance hybrids and Phals, but in this board are people that grows almost everything in s/h and have good results, I bet they will help you!

thanks for the info Frederico! my gongora and stanhopea are the largest and healthiest i've got (which isn't saying much ) and the stanhopea is already in a basket. i don't want to mess with them. i'll keep your mix in mind when it comes time to put the gongora into a basket.

the masd.s and angraceum are so little i will likely try them in s/h until they are growing well. i will look into the stelis and pleurothallis... any thoughts on those?

my trigonidium is mounted so i took it off the potential s/h list. i have a thread on that one too because i think it needs more moss.

learning a little everyday... now i am just waiting to get all my supplies in the mail.
