I can think of another reason the S/H plant may be growing more slowly (on the assumption that the two plants, if reversed, would show similar growth differences): with the evaporation from the S/H pot being greater than that of any traditional culture method, you are actually growing that plant cooler. As plant metabolism is directly connected to temperature...
