Default dendrobiums in S/H with almost no roots

Have had dendrobiums in S/H for a year now and since the plants looked reasonably good didn't check the roots. Surprise! A couple of small new roots and a mass of dead ones. Used KLN in when first repotted. Bloomed but not great. What is wrong?
