Question Just wondering

Can anyone tell me what exactly what hydroton is made of? I have googled a few times and not really found what its made of..its clay prob from the south cause of its red color...?? that is fired to 1200-1500
i understand that but is a special kind of clay? I have a rotary kiln just wondering if i could make my own?

It is clay, maybe a shale clay? It's expanded on the molecular level by an industrial process so I don't know if you could make it. You could certainly experiment and find that you can make something similar. Sounds like a neat project.
