Inexpensive S/H pot?

I have been growing s/h for years & thought I would try an experiment. I started with a clean 5" clay pot with rolled lip, single bottom center drain hole and no side slits. I attached it (inverted) to a 4" glazed ceramic tile using mighty putty. It took about 2 hours to cure rock solid and leak free. I attached 2 noid bulbophyllum with fishing line and filled the reservoir with distilled water. overnight it appears to be leaching thru ok. - Time will tell if it is a viable inexpensive s/h method.

Am curious if anyone else is using something like this successfully.

I also recently bought and set up a few Swampsticks, which gave me the idea to try this...

Kenr62 Hi There, very interesting can you tell me what is inside the inverted clay pot s/h medium or what? How do you know when to water or refill? I guess when the pot looks dry right? It would be good if you could show us step by step in ....

I was reading up on the swampsticks and i saw the reason that they are so porous is cause they are fired at a low temp whereas clay pots are fired at a higher temp so they may not be a porous. I would spray them too

There is only water or a weak fertilizer solution in the pot. Since it is not super-porous, I will be topping it off every day when I mist. The pot is in a covered nano-cube 24 converted aquarium that gets filtered sunlight and a 100W plant lite. Humidity runs around 60-70%. If this one seems to work ok, I will take step by step pix for the next...

Don't believe everything that you read.

While firing temperature can have an impact on the density of a ceramic body, the particle size distribution and raw materials play roles, as well.

I have used flower pots and unglazed ceramic pipe as mounts, with good success.

There was a writer name Rotoul (Australian)that described a growing system like that. He used clay drain pipes. Are clay drain pipes even available anymore?

They are around here (Bucks Co., PA, where home restoration is a likely driving force).

Yes. Sandkuhl in Ohio still makes the tiles. You can order direct or check with your local building supply.
