Paph roots in semi-hydro and temp questions
Default Paph roots in semi-hydro and temp questions

I have this mottled leaf paph that bloomed last year after which I transferred it to SH. It has a nice new growth but the new roots are above the LECA line (I also have growdan cubes in there). Should I do anything about it? The first root that started this way hit the LECA, then turned brown (not rotten, more like hardened) and it seems like now it is growing another root from the dried root to get into the LECA but I'm not sure. I'd like all the new roots just to have unfettered growth into the pot.

Also, I have the SH pots outside. Should I bring the SH plants in sooner as the weather cools because of the added evap cooling they might experience?

Many new budding roots:

The oldest new root is on the left here. You can see a waist where the first root stopped and then a new root seems to be emerging.

If cleaned of dust and manufacturing residues before use, the only issue I've seen is when a new root comes into contact with dry LECA, as that can desiccate the delicate tips. Either water more often, or maybe top dress with the cubes to keep the LECA wetter on top.

I have never had an issue with excessive evaporative cooling of paphs or phrags - phals for sure, but not slippers.

They are Grodan grow cubes. There are threads here in the SH section about adding them to LECA.
