Where is a recommended source for buying a relatively small quantity of rockwool cubes in the USA?

Ray had some. Don't know if he has any left, but you can ask him @ First Rays LLC › Using Science & Logic to Advance Orchid Growing

A quick search for "hydroponics stores in " your area, results in a few shops that sell it in small blocks.

I don't know if I'm missing something but I checked all their sites out and they all sell 1.5" cubes in reasonable quantities but of the stores I checked not one of them sells the mini-cubes (which are what I thought this thread is about?) in quantities under 2 cu ft/$45 which are too many for me!

I guess I misunderstood that you were looking specifically for small cubes. Your question was about where to get small amounts of rockwool. The stuff cuts like butter. I know of one you-tuber who buys it in 4" blocks and cuts her own small cubes as needed during her repotting sessions.

Has anyone tried microfiber wicks from the reservoir and up through the LECA?

I’ve run across a few folks on Facebook that have done that. Best I can tell, if it works at all, it only keeps the immediate area of the wick most, not the entire surface.

Yeah, I've seen folks use the wicking or even the self-watering pots for a sort of semi-hydro culture (not recommending self-watering pots). If doing SH, much more effective to use other methods already stated... grow cubes (my choice) covering top layer with non-porous rocks, etc. The rock wool, layered in, provides much more spaces to retain/release moisture to the LECA than a wicking cord or two, and easier to pot up. Just my opinion, having tried the wicking method a long ways back. Not super effective because ^^ what Ray said.

I wonder how hard it is to grow moss. The bad part is it seems to like higher light than the light indoors. A nice moss top would look great.

I have moss on top of all my s/h pots, which I water daily.
