From flask to s/h - Orchid Board

This for the s/h experts, it is my post from the vanda section of the forum,

"OK, my sister has given me a flask of vanda coerulea (approx 8 plants).

I am planning to put the seedlings in s/h.

Has anyone had any experiences with vanda 'seedlings' in s/h?

I wonder if vandas can be grown in s/h permanently if they adapt to s/h as seedlings?

Does anyone know this person who has grown his/ her vandas in s/h?"

"Plants" do not adapt to semi-hydro culture (as seedlings or whenever). Roots do, which is why a plant can make the transition at any time in it's life.

I do not grow vandaceous plants in s/h culture, but I have known folks - particularly those who are in very dry environments - who do.

Based upon that alone, I would not attempt it, however, Vanda coerulea does prefer to be cooler than most vandas, and coming out of agar, the roots are used to being moist, so it might be worth a plant or two as an experiment.

My deflasked seeldings usually spend around 1 month in a moist sealed container (opened daily), I pot them in s/h once I see new roots. This method has worked very well for my phal seedlings.

I have taken the vanda seedlings out of the flask yesterday, they are in their temporary mini greenhouse/ container. I am waiting for active new root growth in the vanda seedlings before plunging them into s/h.
