One way to distinguish between roots and stems (spikes) is to look at the tip. Does it look like it has a bunch of overlapping sheaths/buds (think of tree buds)? If so, it's probably a spike....

Thanks for the input. I had already soaked it for a day and a half but it was still smelling like chlorine, so I changed the water. I think I'll wait until tomorrow morning and change the water again...

I soaked the pot in bleach solution overnight and I've moved it into pure water. Is this the best way to get rid of the bleach, or should I just leave it in the sun and let it dry?
