I know someone in our Orchid Society who grew this in a vase and had good luck with blooms. No idea if that helps. I do not grow it.

We just had rain here and I was able to collect enough water to water all my plants well! When there is no rain, I fill up jugs at an RO machine as we have a water softener.

The only exception to the above is probably some of the species Cattleyas (like dowiana) that have a resting period. I tend to give my Cattleyas a constant supply of calcium and then fertilize them...
