I'm sure no fertilizer expert, but why would you crush it up? It's intended as a slow release fertilizer. If you want water soluble, just use water soluble.

I recently had a spike get almost to blooms opening, then just keeled over and blasted. I had recently moved it, then either grandkids or dogs pushed it almost against the window and I didn't notice....
