Honeydew / Happy sap - remove it or not?

I’ve read here that the honeydew from aphids falls on leaves and can lead to sooty mold. The aphids and honeydew should definitely be removed. Got it! So far I’ve not had to deal with that.

But...

I got it just over 2 weeks ago in moss that was wetter and more broken down than I like. So I moved it to S/H, figuring the roots were already used to moisture. At the same time I washed the leaves...

Dark spots on Mtssa pbulb plus some dark under leaves

A few weeks ago I got an mtssa shelob okika division at a society auction. It seems healthy overall and has a new growth (no roots on that yet) that seems to be doing well. I have seen it grow...

Thanks Ray and whisperer. As these are inside plants (at least during winter) and I try to keep the wife happy, these are “bad” insects by default. So I’ve used the insect wash.

I do keep mantis...

Update:

On further reading, I’m thinking these are some type of insect larvae. Perhaps fungus gnats? We do occasionally see one or two small flying insects such as fungus gnats or fruit flies, and...

White objects on Onc Isthmi

I have a newish (2-3 weeks) onc isthmi growing in moss in a clay pot. It is a well established large plant with perhaps a dozen bulbs, 2 of which are old and have no leaves.

It has outgrown the...

Thanks all,

The Onc Isthmi is in a clay pot and is VERY crowded. In fact, some bulbs are growing somewhat vertically from other bulbs and hang over the pot edge. The roots from these are all...

There were only 2 paph and I got outbid.

Watering bulbs and leaves - should I?

As a Phal grower, I know that I do not want to water their leaves. I water the media.

For Oncs (just got my first 2, both with long thin leaves, 1 traditional and 1 in S/H) I understand that they...

I know this is an older post but figured I’d add anyway. I believe that these are TEASPOONS not TABLESPOONS. If you use TABLESPOONS, you will have 3x the fertilizer you intended.

Have grown phals indoors - what next?

I’m attending an orchid club auction this week. Can you recommend any other types of orchids that I might consider? I’m looking for something suitable for S/H and that would likely work in my...

Thanks. But after getting the “use chopsticks as a tool” tip, I think I’m good. Spent 2-3 minutes with a chopstick and a handful of LECA and the wobbly plant is fine. It goes where my fingers can’t.

Up to now I have them facing all different ways. Some are parallel to the window, with the leaves spread out an equal distance and all getting more or...

That was great advice! I just potted up one more plant in LECA and used a pointed (not flat end) plastic chopstick as a tool. It went from a tough job with sometimes wobbly results to an easy job...

It is actually a new plant, therefore the quarantine.

But I’m glad to know it is no big deal. Never had a new leaf go weird like this. And never had a leaf go pale.

So thanks for the info....

Disfigured light colored new leaf on phal

I have a new phal that spent more time than I'd like in less-than ideal conditions. Quarantine for new plants. Then extended quarantine after another new plant (not this one) was found to have...

As the OP, I'll chime in here.

I don't expect everyone to agree with each other, and I actually benefit from differing viewpoints. But tone and delivery matter. I don't want to feel, especially...

Got it. I'm all set now. Smash the plant and then poke with chopsticks. What could go wrong? ;)

But all kidding aside, I think I'm set now.

I had tried Ray’s 2 and 4 (maybe not “smash”) and ended up laughing at myself. Now that I know it is doable I’ll be more persistent next time.

Thanks again

I'm not so concerned about packing in the media or about the gaps in the pot. The bigger concern, and perhaps it is unfounded, is that the plants seem much less stable / more wobbly when they are...

Why??

For “normal” Phal care (and yes, I know it is not normal to be right side up in a pot), I didn’t do much beyond watering well with filtered tap water (soaking the roots for 5-10 minutes then...
