Just one little addition to the excellent advice here... don't pull off dead roots. Cut them at the base of healthy tissue with very clean and very sharp scissors. Pulling might damage healthy...

Very strange. In any case, they can't hurt you or the plants. In fact, it might even be beneficial. But if it is a red earthworm, you only have to wait for a little while and it/they will die....
