I'm not an expert, but everything I've heard about dens is that they like to dry between watering. Putting sphag on top of the potting media may keep it too moist and promote root rot.

I Agree with Blueszz, you can nurse it back to give you new growth. I would however not seal the bag completely so there is some air circulation to help prevent fungus.

I would leave it attached at least until the roots are a couple of inches long. If you want, it can be separated (after the roots have grown) and re-planted into regular media.
