What does a healthly root look like that is outside the pot? how about one that is inside the "dirt"?

I'm an nervously nellie about my birds and I afraid it's going to rub off on my orchids. :)

I have four phals, they are all on a table facing west. Since I am in northern CA (Sacramento) it gets pretty hot here but I have a shade I pull down in the afternoon.

I never misted them...

I just ordered one today plus some of the less expensive pots. And I ordered the Monterey mix to repot my phal that has been in the same pot of maybe 4 years. I suspect he is not happy.
