IMO forget the extra air idea, the roots won't need any more air than they happily get in LECA. If you use a completely inert medium there will be nothing for mold to grow onto in the first place....

Yes i use 100% perlite, kept constantly moist via a semi-hydroponic reservoir for deflasking with excellent results. Just be sure to keep it moist and add in appropriate ferts as they grow.
