Default Photo of ghost orchid from the sanctuary

After hearing about this orchid, I had to take my family to see it for ourselves. Here are some pictures that I took using a graciously loaned telephoto lens and my Canon Digital Rebel XTi:

Full frame (10 megapixel image)

Close-up of just the center of the shot

Enjoy!

Wow real nice pictures, when did you take them? Just curious how long the flower are lasting.

Is there any pollination going on? Would it not be a good idea to hand pollinate these in the interest of preservation of the species?

It may be a good Idea to some. But the place where it is, is run by the Audubon Society and I don't believe they will allow anyone to mess with it. Being that it has survived this long, probably best to leave it alone. The moth that pollinate it is still around so with any luck it will be done naturally. Oh by the way they have cameras set up though out the park that were setup to view Panthers but have focus some of them on and around the orchid so is to catch anyone tampering or trying to steal it. Smart

I just can't understand people who would try to steal something like that. Guess I must be naive, but I would never try that. I once stole a cutting of an Epiphylum (cactus) from a Florida island nature sanctuary (to remain unnamed) but that was old days and those things aren't endangered.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

My wife read a study that 1 out 10 people are born without a conscious. Go figure (I think some of them are in the White House)
