Ok i had a random idea today. Desolving baking soda in water loads the water with CO2. So if you put that in a evaporation tray with your orchids would it not release the CO2 for the plants to use?

CO2 Science

CAM plants
Plants that close their stomata during the day to reduce water loss and open them at night for carbon uptake. PEP carboxylase nocturnally fixes carbon into a four-carbon compound that is accumulated within vacuoles. During the day, this compound internally releases carbon dioxide, which is then refixed using rubisco. This phenomenon also effectively inhibits carbon loss by photorespiration. Only about 3 to 4% of earth's plant species can be characterized as CAM plants.

I dont think you are going to get enuff PPMs with baking soda and water in an open environment

Baking soda + water would not release CO2. But baking powder would just not all of it that it could, to get the rest of the CO2 you would have to heat the mixture up.

Why do this?

The atmosphere has plenty of CO2.

Is this for a planted aquarium? A science experiment, perhaps?

Just wanted to know if it would work no interest in really doing it.

Its sounds like something similar in our physiology.
However, dissolved CO2 would more likely be in a carbonate form HCO3-.
I heard of people using yeast with some sugared water to generate CO2, although it does make the environment smell a bit like fermentation.
Alternatively in spending some time in your green house, you would facilitate the same process you describe.
Although I loose some humidity, I found leaving the greenhouse door open for 5-10 minutes also introduces new air. It would appear that the green house environment restores itself fairly quickly.

Co2 is known for increasing the growth ratein certain crops, there has been some studies indicating that it does help some orchids increase flower count, size and earlier budding & flowering, also can increase the leave thickness.

Baking soda and vinegar would release CO2 faster. I would not bother unless the plants were in a small enclosure and at night since many orchids are CAM, which means they will open their stomates at night. Thats when they would "breathe" in CO2.

I have used DIY CO2 reactors to aid aquarium plants with dramatic results. Two liter bottle, two cups sugar, 1/4 tsp yeast, water, airline, air stone. Works for about a month then it turns to white zinfandel. I would think if you put a CO2 bubbler into an orchid tank it could only help. It would be an interesting experiment. Two 20 gallons, one strip light, two mist heads, one tank with a CO2 reactor the other with out.

Is there a list of orchids that are CAM?
