Default Phalaenopsis x Sedirea crosses?

Hi folks -
I recently getting started growing orchids again, and am finding myself fascinated by 1) fragrant orchids, 2) small-growing orchids, and 3) the parentage and development of new orchid crosses (these are not in any particular order...).
I am wondering if Phalaenopsis and Sedirea can be interbred, and if so, what is the new generic name? Has anyone seen any of these, if they do exist? and do they retain their fragrance from either parent?
Looking forward to your wisdom...,
David

Welcome to the board!

That would be an interesting mix! Some google searching reveals that apparently sedirea x phal x arachnis hybrids (arachnopsirea!?) have been created but I'm not sure how valid that is...lots of intergeneric hybrids are listed as having been created, but you'll be hard pressed to find an image or an actual plant for sale. Even if you do, it will be tricky to know for sure if the cross is true...classic story of the legendary paph x phrag cross.

I have seen sedirea x vanda crosses which are quite lovely...sedirea japonica in particular has only become quite popular in cultivation in the west during the last 7-8 years, I think, so the hybridization potential is still relatively unexplored.

Slightly off topic, but apparently there's another species in the sedirea genus...something I discovered only today! You learn something new every day.

Hello, David to the OB.

I'm not completely sure but i'd say they can be crossed. Most Vandaceous plants are in the Sarcanthinea subtribe, as such they can interbred in most cases.

The problem would be that: the pollen would get rejected often because they ARE in different genera that aren't exceedingly close in terms of genes & location
IF the pod does form theres a very good chance they'll be low viability &
the offspring would almost certainly be sterile

Calvin rises a good point... sedirea's aren't exactly old stand-by's in the western growing scene.
But i think they're is/will be Phal x Sedirea hybrids
If not i intend to make some of my own

According to this Thai blog it has been done. Bloggang.com : appendiculata191 :

I think the picture is not correct in this part of the blog though. I love the mini hybrids with Kingidium. Bloggang.com : appendiculata191 :

Sederia japonica has been crossed with:
  • Doritis pulcherrima = Dorideria Memoria Arthur Freed
  • Phalaenopsis Leda = Sediropsis Shinjiku
  • Phalaenopsis amabilis = Sediropsis Nagomasa
  • Phalaenopsis schilleriana = Sediropsis Nagomiyarabi
There is also a registered cross with Doritaenopsis Kyoto, but it is named Arachnopsirea Sayaka, meaning there is arachnis in there somewhere, but that makes no sense.

In the latest OrchidWiz there are 12 crosses with Sederia japonica:
Sed x V = Vandirea
Phal x Sed = Sediropsis
Arach x Sed = Arachnadenia
Asctm x Sed = Ascodenia
Lsa x Sed = Sedirisia
Dor x Sed = Dorederia
Neof x Sed = Neosederia
Rhy x Sed = Rhynchoderia
Vdps x Sed = Vandopirea
Arach x Phal x Sed = Arachnopseria
Rhy x Sed x Vdps = Rhynopseria
Asctm x Neof x Sed x V = Grayara
There supposedly is a Neosedirea Summer Stars available but I have not been able to locate any.
