Default New Cattleya Nomenclature

Well we've been hearing about it and talking about it, but has anyone done anything about it? Moving many Laelias and Sophronitis into Cattleya changes many species, and therefore, hybrids as well. The Royal Horticultural Society has updated, so has the AOS.

There is a great sticky at the top of this forum section that discusses different viewpoints of the change. Some like it, some oppose it. It's a great thread and reads like an article. But, I'm not asking your opinion here. I just want to know what you all are doing? I know many never changed when they moved many Laelias into Sophronitis. Will you just resist, change tags, or what?

Anyone? I just want to hear of you all are changing (most) of your Lc. to just C. to reflect the new changes. I like to get things right, but I want to be on the same page as my fellow orchidists.

These name changes are a load of rubbish, only the fanaticals are changing their labels. It won't be long before the names are changed again so why bother. You just need to keep a check on the changes for research on the RHS website. I'm not changing.

I'm leaving mine. Any new crosses I register will obviously be affected by the change, but all the old ones are keeping their tags. Who recognizes a Sophronitis purpurata, anyway?!

My tags are staying as is. I figure that by the time all this settles down, I won't be around to worry about it.

This is the only name change that I'm actually pretty stoked about. Imagine a world where all these Lc., Sc. Guari-something hybrids are now just Cattleya! I know it will get changed eventually and I wont change my tags........but I can hope that it sticks!

I didn't change my tags before and am not changing now. Even if you are a lumper, submerging all Laelias and Sophronitis in Cattleya is half a solution, because Brassavolas were left outside, on purpose, but they belong to the same group beyond any reasonable taxonomic doubt! The reason is that the name Brassavola has precedence and all the group would have to be named Brassavola if they were put together... that seemed too much a change for the researchers now. But, it is just a matter of time for someone with more guts to propose sinking the new Cattleya group in Brassavola. So, I'm leaving everything as is until the next change. Then I'll see!

isurus79, thats the problem, They are NOT all just cattleyas. Its a crazy mixed up batch of names that has just caused major confusion and unnessesary expense to the orchid world with no real need or justification. The RHS comittee of self gratifying hasbeens should be retired to the back blocks of nowhere and forgotten for doing this.
