Hi, Foil is to keep the lids from sealing when they cool, I read if they did and were removed to insert the seeds breaking the seal would suck air in the jar , makes sense ,foil has a small hole in it that the seeds were inserted thru. then the metal lids with band screwed down . gin

With a plastic pipette I use them for handfeeding baby birds ,disposable , cheap , 1 for each jar.
