I would be highly interested in seeing your photo tutorial. I am a newbie to this sight and trying my hand at stem propagation. I've ordered a few seeds before doing any research on germinating them. Since, I have researched and realized it seems like a lot of work. I am hoping to either get flasks ready to seed or figure out a way to do your "redneck" style!

Hi Lov did you start your process of stem propagation yet? I am also interested in doing that but never have before. I just ordered a kit with supplies in and waiting on it to get to me as we speak. I have a orchid that is in bloom right now and will start mine after all the blooms have fallen off. Keep me filled in on how yours turns out.

I love this post! I've dabbled in tissue culture and flasking and am eager to get back to it. Darned relocation has everything packed up but my husband still grumbles about the ball jars of tissue culture media I have in the refrigerator. Clearly I need my own mini fridge in the new house. He has one for his beer, I'll have one for my tissue culture/flasking, pollen and seed storage!

Don't know whether you're still here... the jar needs to be almost sealed in such a way it is difficult for bacterial and fungal spores to enter, but there is still an opening for gas exchange. The lid on most jars is designed to prevent any air exchange. The trick is to design a closure that allows the seedlings to breathe, but not become contaminated.

Here's my Ansellia protocorms making progress. I posted this in my welcome post, but had made up about 6 original flasks and had 3 go bad. These were making progress, but the ones high on the side seemed to be 'graying' from lack of nutrients I thought( left pic is Mother flask, and right is replate). No sign of mold so I did another 5 replates...4 days later, no contamination, and greening up again! Here's my hood setup I made. I still use hand sanitizer up to my elbows, UVC light, IPA over everything each time I do something etc...I started with a glove box but found the jars would slip from my hands, very unwieldy in trying to do fine work with tweezers!...time will tell!
