When deflasking right to pot? Male
Default When deflasking right to pot?

I guy I know received his first orchid flask ready to be deflasked. (Brassovola nodosa in case that is important.) After removal from the flask, should they immediately be potted up? He was thinking of hardening them off to lower humidity first -- has them in a ziplock which he intends to open increasingly over a number of days -- and then potting them up. Will it matter?

This seems to me a very comprehensive thread, and what I am going to do when I'm ready to deflask the two I have:

Flask -> Compot -> Individual Pots

Don't EVER dry off seedlings. They come from a 100% humidity environment. Simply deflasking them into a lower humidity environment is already a shock.

Put them in compots, in a seedling tub with high humidity, lower light and slightly higher temperature.

I have also read it suggested in published material from the Royal Botanical Gardens that after deflasking and cleaning the media off of the seedlings that they can be placed back in their original, thoroughly cleaned jar/tub with the lid closed for one night to recover before potting them up the next day.

Personally, I have never done this. I just pot them straight into a seedling propagator with a vent in the lid. Leave the vent closed for about 2 weeks, and after that start opening the vent a little each week.

I'm in the process of deflasking some Cymbidium devonianum seedlings. I sowed them from seed and they have been growing for nearly 3 years - with my hobbyist growing environment they took a long, long time to germinate and were super slow to grow. But then, Cym devonianum is a slow grower anyway.
