Default Keiki rooting paste for non-keiki?

This is mostly idle curiosity, as the rootless Phal I have is most likely a lost cause I was just wondering if keiki rooting paste could be used on a plant that lost its roots to rot?

Yes, absolutely. But make sure you get the right kind of product. Some keiki pastes are intended to induce growth of dormant buds, others to induce roots on keikis that are already formed. You want one for roots, and there are many more general products out there intended for rooting any kind of plant that will work just as well. The ones to induce bud growth might get you there too, but with the added step of waiting for roots to form on the new growth.

Keiki paste is cytokinin, which has the opposite effect of what you want. Without getting into details, auxins encourage root growth, cytokinins suppress the root growth and promote shoot growth. So you want the rooting hormone (auxins): DynaGro K-L-N, variable rooting powder, or Kelp products (MaxiCrop, KelpMax etc), instead of Keiki paste.

Just to be clear, there are keiki rooting paste products (with auxins) as well as keiki grow paste products (with cytokinins). There are also many root promoting products (with auxins) in other forms like powders, dips, gels, or in combination with this or that miracle product. Any auxin product will promote rooting.

Your Phal might not be a lost cause. It's amazing what they can come back from once the overwatering stops. Post a photo. If it has great flowers and can't be replaced, try and save it. If it's a nondescript NOID, don't bother.

Yeah, it's pretty wrinkly at this point... it had flowers that were the same colors as this one, but was yellow with burgundy spots; I thought "Hey, these would look really nice together!" But in reality it is a nondescript NOID, sad to say Anyway, it taught me to always look at the roots before buying.
