Default Teaching My Granddaughter To Flask

Last week my granddaughter came over as I was flasking. I got Mom Mom what are you doing? I told her I was flasking orchid seeds. She is 10. She watched me for a few minutes and began asking me questions that I answered. Then it hit her, she could do this to. Mom Mom I got again yes I said can I do it to. So I gave her a pair of glove and moved out of her way. Here is a picture of her flasking some seeds. She is drawling up the seeds in a syringe getting read to flask. She will soon be addicted to orchids also...

This week we went and checked the containers and 4 have been contaminated the others are fine. I will remove the contamination tomorrow and use the bleach with plastic to get rid of the mold. Wish me luck.

Erica sure did. I also had a smile on my face as now I have something special I can talk to her about all the time that her moms not interested in at all.

I might even get her some orchid stuff for her own for Christmas. If she still continues to be interested in growing them. She would be able to see what she sow's bloom since she is so young. On the other hand I may not be so lucky and I know she could raise them once I am gone. I know I could leave them to her in my will and she would love them like I do.

Oh that would be a wonderful thing to inherit - love for orchids, plus grandpa's collection! It's great to see children interested in orchids, after all they are definitely not boring plants!

You did not say what you were doing with the flasks infected with mold.

You can burn away the mold through the side of the flask, using a magnifying glass (lense) and sun rays.

What I did was removed the mold and then placed a few drop of peroxide in the spot using a needle. I also put plastic and the hole and cotton ball with bleach and another sheet of plastic wrap. Waited 3 hours removed the cotton ball placed lid over plastic and sealed jars once again. Hoping that the bleach kills anything the peroxide don't. I then place under lights for 24 hours. This was all done yesterday so we will see if there will be more signs of mold or if I took care of the problem.
