Hi all. Lately i have been wondering, why dont you ever see hybrids between these to genusses. Have any of you tried breeding these, and have any photos of how the blooms look. This will be my next experiment

A few (7 or so) Phragmipaphium hybrids have been registered, but clear pictures are rare and usually tend to resemble the pod parent strongly or show little or no characteristics of the supposed pollen parent. The plants never seem to get distributed even though they would certainly bring high prices.

I'm pretty skeptical that such hybrids have actually been succesfully made, and I think that is a pretty common attitude. It is sometimes reported that seeds will germinate but that seedlings are not viable and die while still in flask. That I tend to believe.

Many have certainly tried, and maybe such hybrids are possible, but have different requirements in flask that no one has figured out. If you do try keep that in mind. At minimum you will need to try something other than the standard practices and flasking media.

This one i found. Paph. micranthum x phrag besseae, does not even look like one of the perents.

It's generally accepted that from a genetic perspective, Paphs and Phrags are too distantly related to be compatible. I wouldn't rule out that perhaps some paphs and phrags might produce viable progeny, but overall, it appears to be very rare.

As already stated, there have been a very limited number of reported successes (defined as crosses that produce viable seedlings, which have then been raised to maturity). And, all of those are debated. The flowers & foliage very strongly resemble the paph parent.

Personally, I'm not convinced, but then I've never seen any of these crosses in person, and I'm obviously not a biologist/botanist who would be able to remark on the results of testing.

I will say that about 10 years ago, I pollinated a maudiae hybrid paph with besseae, and that produced a viable seed pod. However, the flasking company I sent it to said there was no germination.

Somehow they do not mix well.
There are not around for clear reason. It does not work. lol

By the way, that picture is totally not from the said parents.
Some kind of sequential bloomer with some freaky shape at best. hahaha

Phrags are notorious for self-pollinating while you try to pollinate.

While there are crosses, plants are never shown. I strongly suspect that there are no such plants in existence.
