I have used the growing medium recipe that they provide; the original source for the recipe is the link to Dokmai gardens that is cited toward the bottom of the AOS article. It works, but I would use slightly less water than they recommend. Orchid seeds germinate just fine on this medium, but I do wonder if some of the pre-formulated media might work better? I don't know. Another thing I might try is using glucose instead of table sugar (glucose = dextrose = "corn sugar" that is sometimes available at beer-making supply companies). Glucose is a simpler sugar, and my thought is that it might be more useable by the young protocorms. The suggestions about the water and the glucose are just suggestions, nothing more than that; the recipe as given does work, but it is a little wetter than I would prefer, and growth slows down a couple months after seeds germinate.

Regarding actual seed flasking, I found that the method described at this link is easy, effective and very suitable for use at home: Very Easy Sterilisation Method - My Seedlings

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I read the original article from dokmai...or...I can't remember anymore, and it inspired me to try this:
Seed sowing - the lazy way

I struggled with my home-made glove box and had to come up with something different.

I never really had any luck with homemade media though, so I'm using Sigma P668, but I'm sowing on my kitchen counter in open air and it works well.
