After Pollination

Hello,

I am a newbie but have orchid fever and want to contribute to this forum with some things I have read from other posts but wish there was images to go with it.

This post is about after the pollination process and what I have seen with my own orchids.

I cross pollinated my phalaenopsis orchid on May 11, 2013 and want to show others what has been happening so far.

These next set of pictures were taken May 22, 2013:

I have found that not all will survive and if they turn a yellowish pink that they are going to die and fall off


Now I am a newbie so I am just assuming these next pictures are what seed pods look like while they grow.

Now for those newbies like me that try pollinating orchids this is what they will look like after the process.


I will keep this post going with updates if anything changes and I hope this helps out newbies trying this like me.

I already have seeds that I bought and plan to make a post on:
1: Building my Glove Box.
2: Preparing my media and flasks.
3: Sowing the seeds or is it called flasking the seeds?

You will be sowing the seeds on agar in flasks. "Flasking" is a common word used for that.

Those are "capsules", not "pods". (Just being a picky so-and-so.)

They ought to continue to grow for several months, and for "green-pod" harvest (yeah. I know it's really a capsule, but that's still the common phrase), wait until you see either end of the green capsule just start to turn yellow, then grab it right away.

Be aware that they may grow well, but there is no guarantee that you'll have any viable seed.

+1^ If I'm not mistaken, from what I've read (about "Green-Pod" harvesting) is that when one end starts to yellow, it's not too long after that, that the pod splits, so u will need to keep a close eye on it at that point... But this prob also depends on the species as well... Please correct me if I'm wrong, though, Ray

Well These pictures were taken on June 8, 2013. It has been almost a month after pollination, so here is an update.

This is the smallest of the three. Not much has changed on it, might also be too small to get any seeds.


The medium sized orchid is doing well so far from what I can see.


The largest orchid seems to be doing well also.

Looking good! You are going to have tons of seeds!
A while back, I pollinated my yellow Phal (image attached) with some other yellow Phal (sorry, no photo) and soon will have some seeds as well. I wonder if you may be interested in swapping a small portion of the seeds, so both of us will have more variety for flasking?

Of course I would trade some seeds with you.
I don't think mine will be ready for at least another 3 months. Also if anyone else is looking to trade, let us know!!

I will be back home in about 10 days. Then I will let you know how my pod is developing. I'm going to have a couple of other genuses seeds. Literally, my hands are itching to do some seed sowing - .
