That's do-able. Don't over pack the sphag, and watch the water (let the sphag become barely moist before watering). Sphag should be replaced annually.

Fine fir bark or coconut husk chips mix are other good options.

Or, lava rock. I have always grown oncidiums in lava rock. Now my mini oncidiums are doing well in small chips of it.

you can toss a bare root orchid on the counter top and water it everyday and it will do fine.

All mine are in sphagnum bec thats what they were grown in. I learned to leave the mix alone and not be slick. if its grown in bark I leave it in bark.

But as one said dont pack the sphagnum too tight and you can add some tree fern or small coco chips or small bark to keep the sphagnum from packing.

I potted my Onc. Wildcat in med. bark chunks last year and the pot is full of roots now and it is in bloom. It's in a clear plastic pot. But everyone's culture is different so you need to find what works for you.
