Default can you get a new orchid from leaves?

ok I was moving my orchids around when I was watering them 3 weeks ago and I snapped off two leaves of one of my cats right where another new leaf was comming out. So the whole to of the plant is off. I placed the "new" plant section botom in water. I grow s/h so I have a tray under to catch the water. My question is this, Will the leaf grow roots? It has not seemed to wither or soften at all, I konw you can do this with other plants but I could not find any info on orchids?

Nope! I doubt it. Sorry. I "snap off" growths all the time and it turns into a learning exercise on how to be more careful. While lots of plants can grow new roots from broken leaves, Cats don't (to my knowledge). Certain shoots of certain orchids will (like Vandas and some Epidendroms, but not Cats.)

Many plants are propigated from leaf cuttings. Unfortunately, orchids aren't. They look good now because they are very thick, and naturaly store a lot of water. But they will eventually just shrivle and rot. The rest of your plant should recover, with some TLC.

According to a reseach of Tanaka, in the "Micropropagation of orchid" book of professor Arditti, Phalaenopsis can be mass clonal propagation using leaf tissue. I did not read the Cat chapter so I am not sure.

Restripeas will grow new plants from leaves. Cut off the leaf, including the stem, and place into damp moss. In a few weeks you'll see new leaves starting at the junction of the stem and leaf. It seems to work more often on leaves that have bloomed.

I think these are new shoots coming from dormant axil buds.

Cool Yes..you can!

I will vouch for newflasker on the comment about the research that is mentioned (actually the WHOLE book is all about the different ways to grow Orchids from alternate means as well as Seeding).
I recently borrowed the book from the Orchid Society I belong to...and though my education in the biology aspect is VERY limited.
They DO mention a few interesting ways, though some are quite complex and need very specific growing Media and Materials.
If you have a Phal that is finished flowering, you can actually propagate MORE from the clippings made from the orchid's inflorescence.
Same goes with orchid leaves; certain parts and types of leaves can be used to culture and propagate "clones"...but as I said these methods can be very difficult to do!
Gonna take me a "little" while to get through the book, but even if I understand a 1/4 of everything in it...I will still have a better understanding as to HOW orchids can be Propagated!
