Hi Gin,
I buy medium from PhytotechlabHome Page - PhytoTechnology
Under $10 you can buy a small bottle enough to make a liter of media and you can get hundred of seedlings. I tried several kind of medium from them and they are real good. Cheers.

Is there any particular all purpose medium that is complete? Or do I need to mix in other things?

What do I buy? What medium should I get? There seems to be quite a few to choose from.

For making the media you need the following:
- 1 ltr. destilled water
- 6 gr. agar-agar powder
- 5 gr. sugar
- 2 gr. fertilizer 20-20-20 (powder)
- hydrogen peroxide 3% to sterilize dry seeds.
ou can find also good explanation on this site: Lotte & Thomas Orchids

Most difficult is working under sterile conditions.

Thanks for the reply.
I am still unclear about a few things.
So the distilled water is the base for the medium? The How do you gel the liquid? Or do you use it as a liquid?

Agar is what? I have seen it written, but I don't understand how it fits into the puzzle. I have been stalking these sites about propagation but can not find these last few answers.

I try the following media and like it :
PhytoTech Lab E-Commerce - Detail
It could be consider as a general purpose media . It works with Phal., Den., and Cat. It could use for germinating and replating. You buy a small bottle of media for a liter for less than $10, mix with one liter of distillation water, warm it and poor into your jars (or use 1/10 of it).
After you're successful and feel comfortable with germinating orchid you can do more: use your medium, change pH, add potato, banana, vitamin, plant grow regulators and so on. Cheers

Tap water contains some chemicals which may not good for germinating orchid seeds so it's better to use distilled water.

Agar is used to gel your media. It works like Jello. You can use it to make your medium solid or semi-solid. You can buy it from labs or from Asian super-market (it's cheaper, $2 for 20 gram enough to sow thousand seedlings).
